The Research Division experienced extensive changes in the reporting year: two researchers left the Institute in the first half of the year and one passed away. Six researchers joined the division in the second quarter and the total number of researchers grew from six to 12. By year end, AISA had a cohort of 13 researchers. This 100 per cent growth can be attributed to management’s attention to research matters as core to the existence of AISA. In addition, six interns worked at the Institute during the year. Together with the researchers they attended various national and international conferences where they presented on different research projects. AISA promotes both socio-political and natural scientific research with various external researchers and collaborators. Fifty per cent of the research outputs this reporting year resulted from commissioned work and special projects jointly funded by AISA and partners. Furthermore, the Institute engaged four research fellows who were responsible for leading projects and ensuring the production of research outputs, ranging from conferences (with published proceedings) to book projects. In terms of its mandate, AISA augmented its research capacity by commissioning work from 45 African researchers from various African countries.
