The organisation introduced a number of initiatives to promote research and encourage staff to undertake research that is relevant to policy makers. AISA restructured the research division into two cohorts: The Social Sciences Cohort and the Natural Sciences Cohort, headed by the Directors of Research who also oversee Library and Documentation Services (LDS) and special projects, which include the research laboratory that will house the GIS and data management units. Two most exciting successes to report are the brainstorming sessions that will impact policy decisions, as they cover current issues on the continent and the successful completion of the five year research agenda entitled, Seeking solutions for Africa’s sustainable development. The three related priority research themes are: Africa’s developmental state; cohesive and sustainable communities devoid of conflict, crime and corruption; and sustainable resource management and use.
