Bernard Magubane Fellowships Program

The Purpose of the Program

The Africa Institute of South Africa (AISA) is offering a limited number of Fellowships to South African MA graduates in the fields of humanities and the social sciences. The Fellowships are in honour of the intellectual and inspirational work of Professor Ben Magubane. The goals of the Program is to provide an opportunity for young South African graduates and researchers to conduct critical and cutting edge research in line with the Magubane tradition, to contribute to AISA’s research mandate and to enrich the individual candidates’ own research endeavours.

Duration

Each year AISA will award three Fellowships running over a minimum of three months each, during January to March, April to June, and July to September. Successful Fellows will be based at AISA’s offices in Pretoria. Fellows will have access to AISA’s world-class library and research facilities as well as a chance to partake in its wealth of research networks.

Eligibility

Applicants must be MA graduates with the intention to study or already studying towards a PhD in a field relating to African studies and in line with AISA’s research interests of which details are available on AISA website: www.ai.org.za.

Expectations

Fellows are expected to write a paper and visit a Research Institute outside RSA, preferably in Africa, and on return write a report. In this regard, Fellows will be encouraged to choose any of research institutes that have a working relationship with AISA.

Financial Arrangements

AISA will provide basic working and residential accommodation (where necessary), and a living allowance/stipend for the successful applicant for the duration of the Fellowship.

Applications

The application form, which will be available online, should be completed and returned with an academic CV (maximum of 3 pages); the applicant’s research proposal (maximum 4 pages prefaced by an abstract of 100 words) presenting the research problem, methodology and indicating the relevance of the research to one or more of AISA’s research themes. In addition, applicants should submit, a letter testifying to institutional affiliation, recommendation by the thesis supervisor and contact details of two referees.

Applications must be received at least three months before the start of each fellowship.

Selection

Applications will be evaluated and selected by the Selection Committee based on the following criteria:

Academic excellence

The importance of the proposed research

The relationship between the objective of the research and AISA’s goals and priorities

Priority will be given to females and candidates from previously disadvantaged communities.
