The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) in collaboration with Freedom Park, University of South Africa (UNISA), South African Democracy Education Trust (SADET), the National Research Foundation (NRF), AISA, Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Intellectual Heritage Project (Rhodes University) celebrated the life and scholarship of Prof. Ben Magubane who, as part of a larger collective, has given so much to the national liberation project and building an African scholarly community as a committed intellectual. This is even more significant when the individual turns 80 years of age. The celebration began with a gala dinner on 26 August 2010 at Freedom Park, where one of Prof. Magubane’s students, Prof. Olujimi Adesina from Rhodes University, spoke about his life and times by presenting slides with photos of the family while in exile. The celebration continued until 28 August 2010, when a gala dinner was hosted by UNISA wherein the Deputy President of South Africa, Kgalema Motlanthe, gave the keynote address in honour of Prof. Magubane.
