The Africa Institute of South Africa (AISA) became a statutory body 2001, in terms of the Africa Institute of South Africa Act (no 68 of 2001). Although the institute has been in existence for more than 40 years, this saw it being brought into the fold of science councils in South Africa, and given the full support of the Department of Science and Technology. AISA’s mandate is to perform research into issues affecting the rest of Africa.
AISA has the following Council to take its work forward. Prof. N Ogude,Vice Principal University of Pretoria, heads the illustrious group. She is joined by Prof BC Lategan, Director Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study; Prof. N Biekpe, Professor of Development Finance & Econometrics of University of Stellenbosch; Mrs. M L Gcabashe, Programme Manager Eskom; Prof. N Bohler-Muller, Advocate/Professor Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University; Prof. Y Sadie, Professor of Politics Department of Politics and Governance University of Johannesburg; Dr B Hlatswayo, Process Design Specialist Tongaat-Hullet Sugar; Ms S Padayachy, Head of Internal Audit: Momentum Group And Mr Dhesigen Naidoo, Group Executive: International Cooperation and Resources (DST Representative).
With this Council supporting its work, AISA believes that it can fulfill its vision of becoming the first port of call on African current events, and of making a difference to the direction of African policy, development and unification efforts.
