The Africa Institute of South Africa (AISA) is now fully integrated into the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC). This came through the Repeal of the AISA Act (2014). The institute is entrusted with the mandate of conducting research on Africa that makes a difference. The incorporation offered AISA with an opportunity to strengthen its institutional presence as the HSRC’s Africa studies focal point.
The new AISA research agenda will be a milestone in building trust. Within the HSRC and in collaboration with other Research Programmes, the Institute is mandated to synthesise the outcomes of research into opinions that inform policy formulation and decision-making on and in Africa.
AISA’s research objectives are aligned with government priorities, which will not only benefit South Africa, but other African states that face similar challenges. It is believed that exploring African solutions to Africa’s challenges – with government priorities forming a foundation – will ensure that the research agenda meets the needs of all stakeholders.
